How to treat surface scratches
Inevitably, over time, timber floors will get scratched. If light
surface scratches bother you, try these tips.
■ Mix instant coffee with water to make a paste. Apply to
the scratch. On light wood, leave it for 1-2 minutes, on
medium-coloured wood, leave it for 4-6 minutes, and on
dark wood, 10 minutes. Gently rub off with a lint-free cloth.
■ Disguise scratches on dark wood with brown shoe polish,
matching it to the lightest shade in the wood.
■ For very light scratches, rub a walnut along the line. The
natural oils fill in the scratch so it doesn't stand out as much.

9. It’s hard to go
past
the beauty of a
romantic bedroom. But
you can save it from
being overly pretty
and add strength of
character with touches
of deeper colours
and handsome polished
floorboards.
10. When pretty in
pink
is the order of the
day, you can create a
bright and courageously
coloured room by
stripping back and
exposing a polished
honey-tone floor.
11. Neat and easily
renovated,
60s homes
sometimes have a
fine timber floor just
begging to be revealed
from under a 50-year-
old carpet. When the
walls are stripped back,
and the fireplace left
intact, look what a great
place you can create.
And with dedicated
hunting you can do it
all on a budget.
